About Herculane Thermal Water
Herculane Thermal Water is a thermo-mineral spring water extracted from deep aquifers in the Carpathian Mountains, in the Baile Herculane area — the oldest spa resort in Europe. With a total mineralization of approximately 2500 mg/L, a slightly alkaline pH, and a spring temperature of [X]°C, it is classified as calcium-sulfur water, formed over thousands of years in an environment free from pollution.
Its purity is comparable to that of air at over 3000 m altitude. It is the main ingredient in all Ivatherm products and replaces ordinary purified water — bringing an active function to every formula.
The History of the Herculane Springs
Cultural and Historical Context
Legend has it that Hercules, son of Zeus, came to these springs in search of the Golden Fleece. Wounded in his battle with the Hydra, he bathed in these waters, regained his strength, and defeated it. The name of the resort and the springs preserves this memory.
In the Roman era, Băile Herculane became a refuge of health and refinement, frequented by aristocrats and emperors. Centuries later, the charm of the place continued to attract European elites — from Franz Joseph to Empress Elisabeth.
The therapeutic tradition of these springs long predates the modern cosmetics industry.

Demonstrated clinical benefits
Randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind in-vivo study – University of Medicine, Manila, 2018 – demonstrated a significant increase in skin hydration and a reduction in transepidermal water loss (TEWL) after regular use.
Erythema was reduced by 75%. Stinging sensation was reduced by 73%. Burning sensation was reduced by 82%. Pain was reduced by 61% in an in-vivo controlled interventional study on 90 patients — Elias University Hospital, Bucharest, 2019.
Herculane Thermal Water reduced spontaneous histamine release by 56% in the young subject and by 72% in the elderly subject in an ex-vivo study — SEPhRA, France, 2006.
Herculane Thermal Water significantly reduced the production of reactive oxygen species by 34%, which are responsible for oxidative stress, in an in vitro study — SEPhRA, France - 2018 (human keratinocytes were exposed to UVA radiation).
An ex-vivo study on human keratinocytes and fibroblasts — EADV, Cluj-Napoca, 2009 — confirmed the reduction of cellular apoptosis after UVA irradiation, highlighting a protective effect at a structural level.
Frequently asked questions
Thermal water is spring water with a stable mineral composition, formed over thousands of years through contact with underground rocks. Unlike purified or demineralized water, it contains minerals and trace elements with documented biological effects on the skin — it is not just a vehicle, but an active ingredient.
Its specific mineral profile—especially the presence of copper, zinc, and selenium alongside calcium and magnesium—gives it a combined action: anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, healing, and skin barrier protection. This combination is documented in independent clinical studies conducted in medical institutions in Romania, France, and the Philippines.
Yes. The clinical study from Elias University Hospital, Bucharest (2019), conducted on 90 patients with sensitive and reactive skin, confirmed the reduction of skin inflammation parameters — erythema, edema, and local temperature — after application.
Yes. The mineralization of ~2500 mg/L is optimal for daily cosmetic use, without disturbing the skin barrier or the stability of the formulas in which it is incorporated.
Because it replaces ordinary purified water with water that has soothing and anti-irritant effects on the skin.
Yes. It is prescribed by dermatologists after aesthetic procedures and is sold exclusively in pharmacies, not in regular cosmetics retail stores.
