What is retinol and what benefits does it have for the skin?

Ce este retinolul și ce beneficii are pentru piele

Retinol is one of the most studied and effective ingredients in anti-aging cosmetics. Derived from vitamin A, retinol acts at the skin cell level, stimulating collagen production and accelerating cell turnover.

What is retinol and how does it work?

Retinol is a form of vitamin A that, after application to the skin, is converted into tretinoin (retinoic acid), its active form. It acts in the dermis, stimulating fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin.

Scientifically proven benefits

  • Wrinkle reduction - reduces the depth of fine lines and expression wrinkles;
  • Increased firmness - stimulates the production of type I and III collagen;
  • Even skin tone - reduces dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation;
  • Acne regulation - prevents pore clogging and reduces inflammation;
  • Exfoliation - accelerates cell turnover and improves texture.

Forms of retinol and tolerability

Classic retinol carries a risk of irritation (redness, peeling, sensitization), especially at high concentrations or on sensitive skin. Newer forms, such as Granactive Retinoid (hydroxypinacolone retinoate), offer similar efficacy with significantly increased tolerability.

How to introduce retinol into your routine?

  • Start with a low concentration (0.025-0.1%);
  • Initially use it 2-3 times/week, in the evening;
  • Gradually increase the frequency as your skin adapts;
  • Always use SPF in the morning - retinol increases UV sensitivity;
  • Avoid combining it with AHAs/BHAs on the same night.

Contraindications

Retinol is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. For very sensitive skin with active eczema or rosacea, consult a dermatologist before use.

Ivatherm offers solutions with Granactive Retinoid, a superior form of retinol with a low risk of irritation: IvaRG Regenerating Night Cream with Granactive Retinoid for nocturnal regeneration, and IvaRG Regenerating Day Cream SPF30 which completes the routine with sun protection and hyaluronic acid.
