What is telogen effluvium: causes, duration, what you can do

A sudden increase in the number of lost hairs, appearing a few months after a demanding period, typically describes the clinical picture of telogen effluvium, a form of diffuse hair loss with an identifiable cause and a predictable progression.

What is telogen effluvium?

Hair strands go through well-defined biological cycles. Under normal conditions, most strands are in the active growth phase (anagen), after which they progressively enter the resting phase (telogen) and are physiologically shed. In telogen effluvium, a systemic stress factor suddenly synchronizes a large number of follicles into the telogen phase, resulting in massive and diffuse shedding 2–3 months after the trigger.

Common causes and duration

Triggering factors are usually identifiable: severe stress, childbirth, prolonged febrile episodes, restrictive diets, or iron deficiencies. The acute form is self-limiting—it resolves spontaneously within a few months of removing the cause. When shedding persists for more than 6 months, the condition becomes chronic and requires dermatological evaluation, including blood tests, to rule out an underlying pathology.

What you can do at home

The first therapeutic step consists of identifying and correcting the trigger: managing stress, nutritional rebalancing, and correcting biologically confirmed nutritional deficiencies. In parallel, the scalp benefits from local support through an active topical treatment.

ivaHair Strong Hair Serum demonstrated, in the 2026 Ivatherm clinical study, significant efficacy in telogen effluvium and female androgenetic alopecia.* Apply daily, 2 pipettes to a freshly washed scalp, without rinsing. For internal nutritional support, it is recommended to combine with Keratine 1000 Biotine - 2 capsules per day, after a meal.

7 active ingredients, 7 mechanisms of action against hair loss

  1. Activates dormant hair follicles, transitioning them from the telogen phase to the anagen phase by stimulating autophagy at a cellular level
  2. Targets hair follicle stem cells (HFSC*), prolonging the anagen (growth) phase
  3. Nourishes, strengthens, and consolidates hair anchorage
  4. Protects against external aggressions
  5. Hydrates and prevents hair breakage
  6. Fortifies and provides elasticity, resistance, and shine
  7. Soothes and protects the scalp

*Monocentric clinical study, 6 months (June 2025–February 2026), 20 subjects (15 women, 5 men), aged 18–79, with androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium. Evaluation via TrichoScan®, standardized photographic documentation, and clinical examination. Primary Physician Dr. Irinel Nedelcu and the Ivatherm Research and Development Department, 2026.

Telogen effluvium can cause concern due to the volume of hair lost, but understanding the mechanism and the triggering factor is the first step toward an effective therapeutic approach.
