What is couperose and how do you deal with it?

Life can be rosy even when you have rosacea. If you are well-informed, the first stage of rosacea can be improved with the right dermo-cosmetics. Perhaps an acute flare-up of skin redness goes unnoticed, but if you ignore it, this inflammatory condition can worsen. I learned firsthand how rosacea manifests and which cream is suitable for it.

It's morning. I quickly hide in the shower. Among the drops, I listen to "Believer" by Imagine Dragons, loud, as much as my smartphone can handle. Ah, this music makes me feel alive, unstoppable, infallible.

I get out of the shower and my enthusiasm dissolves with the steam on the mirror. Again, my cheeks and chin are red, my skin is dry and stings. My skin suffers when the water temperature goes above the dermatologist's recommendation. Hot water activates my rosacea, my skin turns red, gets irritated, and discomfort appears. "How can I leave the house like this?" is the only refrain I hear in my mind.

Extreme temperatures, saunas are not recommended for rosacea-prone skin. Neither is prolonged exposure to UV rays without sun protection, spicy foods, or too many glasses of gin. All of these trigger redness, make the skin feel like crepe paper, and accentuate visible capillaries.

Rosacea Symptoms

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition with progressive evolution, and couperose (rosacea) is the first stage of rosacea. The symptoms of couperose are easy to observe:

  • Skin feels fragile
  • Intermittent or permanent redness
  • Burning or stinging sensation
  • Visible capillaries, like spider veins

Rosacea and the Sun

On sunny days or in summer, at the seaside, just a few minutes of sun exposure without SPF triggers an acute flare-up of skin redness. Increased intradermal temperature is a known aggravating factor for rosacea, and sun exposure damages collagen and elastin fibers, making blood vessels become apparent.

I love the sun, but I don't like it at all if my face starts to look like a ripe pomegranate when I want to take a selfie. And no, I don't rely on Instagram filters to solve my problem, but on the dermatologist.

Daytime Recommendation: Rosederm with SPF30

The dermatologist recommended that I use Rosederm cream with SPF30 in the morning, which protects rosacea-prone skin against UV rays, and if I am exposed to the sun for longer periods or go on vacation, to reapply it every 2 hours.

The Rosederm cream formula repairs, soothes, and prevents the increase of intradermal temperature, and the UVA and UVB solar filters protect the skin from the harmful effects of solar radiation.

Night Cream for Rosacea

In the evening, I use Rosederm Cream for sensitive rosacea-prone skin, without sun filters, with clinically proven efficacy in reducing redness, decreasing inflammation, and preventing capillary dilation.

Innovative Ingredient: Aldavine 5X

The cream contains Aldavine 5X, an extract from brown and red algae, which:

  • Reduces the degradation of collagen and elastin fibers
  • Prevents capillary dilation
  • Improves microcirculation

Algae are a unique source of proteins, carbohydrates, polysaccharides, vitamins, and minerals. Brown and red algae contain over 60 minerals, 12 vitamins, and amino acids, and other biologically beneficial substances for the skin.

The cream has a light texture that spreads easily and absorbs quickly, soothing the skin shortly after application.

Makeup Removal: Anti-Redness Micellar Lotion

Before using either of the two creams, I cleanse my face with Anti-Redness Micellar Lotion, specially designed for rosacea-prone skin. Its gentle formula cleanses delicately, soothes irritations, and rebalances the skin's pH – without alcohol, perfume, soap, or parabens.

Rosacea Can Worsen

Rosacea most commonly appears starting at the age of 30, and if the initial intermittent symptoms are not kept under control, it can worsen.

It was difficult for me to get used to the idea that rosacea cannot be cured, and my heart sank when I learned how unpleasantly it evolves if not kept under control:

  • Stage 2 – on a background of persistent redness, papules and pustules (acne rosacea) appear
  • Stage 3 – phymatous rosacea: thickened skin with an irregular surface, especially in the nose area
  • Stage 4 – ocular rosacea: inflammation of the eyes accompanied by conjunctivitis

Enough reasons not to ignore the symptoms of rosacea, right?

My routine for controlling rosacea

My routine includes Anti-Redness Micellar Lotion and the two Rosederm creams, day and night, with and without SPF, which the dermatologist recommended I use for at least 3 months.

So, I take my three allies everywhere with me, which soothe irritations, reduce redness, and restore skin comfort.

This way, redness doesn't ruin my selfies or my good mood.
